STREAM POLLUTION

THE GASWORKS TROUBLE. (To the Editor.) Sir, —Referring to the article headed “Stream Pollution” in the “Wairarapa Times-Age” of the 20th inst, the pro-perty-owners abutting the stream mentioned are quite aware this was an accident, and I might mention, a similar accident occurred less than eighteen months ago. Our complaint is that there is a constant pollution of this stream. The Borough Sanitary Inspector points ' that the - Gasworks are in some respects not well placed and that is the trouble in a nutshell. All the surface drainage from the gasworks yard finds its way into this stream, and excepting on the occasions when there is a fresh in the stream, there is a most offensive smell and discolouration, and there is more than a suspicion that some waste matter is allowed to enter the stream. To those who remember this stream before the gasworks were moved, the pollution is very apparent. May I suggest to the people responsible a simple remedy? Place an embankment a few inches high to prevent the surface filth draining in to the stream and provide a sump similar to the sump residents are compelled to provide. Further, if a private person or firm created this nuisance, would an expression of regret be accepted?. I am, etc., CITIZEN. Masterton, April 21.
