INTOXICATED MOTORIST
YOUTH PLACED ON PROBATION. (By Telegraph—Press Association). AUCKLAND, April 21. “It is only your youth that stops me from dealing very severely with you. This case would have meant a £lOO fine if I had been dealing with an adult,” said the Magistrate, Mr F. K. Hunt, to Eric Douglas Mathieson (18), a motor salesman, who admitted having been in a state of intoxication while in charge of a car on Ponsonby Road last night. He was convicted and placed on probation for two years, his licence to be cancelled for twelve months. He was also ordered to pay the damage done to the car. The police said that about 11 o’clock last night the conductor of a tram saw a car without lights following. The car was seen to collide with a stationary car. part of its rear being damaged. A police sergeant, who was on the tram, stopped the car and medical examination revealed that the driver (Mathieson). was drunk. He said two drinks of wine had been given him by a man at Henderson. Before inflicting a penalty Mr Hunt called for a report by the Probation Officer.
