The heaviest women smokers the world over, according to a tobacco trade journal, are the ladies of England! If this is true, what a change it indicates in the attitude of the sex towards the weed since Victorian days, when the ladies (including the Queen herself) regarded smoking—even for men —with something like horror. But despite all attempts to frown it down —and keep it down —the habit lias spread and spread everywhere, as demonstrated by the enormously increased consumption of tobacco at Home and abroad. Hero in New Zealand the increased demand lias been especially marked since the appearance of the now famous blends, Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Cavendish, Riverhead Gold and Desert Gold. The toasting of the leaf —a process as ingenious as efficient — it is that differentiates these brands from all others. Toasting not only eliminates most of the nicotine in them, thus rendering them comparatively innocuous, but is largely responsible for their delicious flavour and fascinating aroma. There are no other toasted tobaccos manufactured. This is worthy of note. 724
