HOSPITAL AFFAIRS

MEETING OF WAIRARAPA BOARD. COLLECTION OF PATIENTS' FEES. The chairman, Mr H. H. Mawley, presided at the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa Hospital Board, held this morning. Others present were: Messrs F. E. Bolton, F. Court, W. Britland, D. McGregor, W. Thomas, C. T. Richardson, F. W. Parry, Trevor Beetham, W. I. Armstrong, Arch. Clark, P. R. Welch, W. B. Martin, Dr G. S. Sharp, Mrs S. Fletcher and Miss C. McKenny. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs J. C. Ewington, R. Smith and J. F. Thompson. Reporting on the financial position of the board at the end of the year, the Managing-Secretary, Mr Norman Lee. stated: —“The position as shown in the statement I think will give general satisfaction. The year has finished with a credit balance on account of maintenance and capital funds, as follows: Maintenance, £1,599 0s 3d; capital, £563 9s Id; total £2,162 9s 4d. The bank balance as shown in the pass book is £3,328 Is Bd, and cheques outstanding total £974 8s 4d. Local contributing authorities levies at March 31, 1938, and Government subsidy on both maintenance and capital, have been paid in full. “The position in regard to patients’ fees collections is as follows, the corresponding figures for 1936/37 being given in parentheses: Masterton Hospital, £5,759 (£4,833..; Greytown Hospital £5,759 (£4,833); Greytown Hostal, £1,412 (£1372); other hospitals, £654 (£327); District Nurse, £33 (—); Totals £11,468 (£9,507). As advised from time to time during the year I anticipated fees collections would exceed amount estimated. This has proved correct, and actual collections are £1,293 in excess of estimates.” The return of patients for March at the institutions controlled by the board was as follows, the figures for the corresponding month last year being given in parentheses:— Masterton Hospital: In hospital on February 28, 123 (114); admitted during the month, 111 (121); total under treatment, 234 (235); discharged, 128 (119); in hospital on March 31, 106 (116). Daily average, 113.93 (111.22). Greytown Hospital: In hospital on February 28, 28 (14); admitted during the month, 42 (21); total under treatment, 70 (35); discharged, 44 (18); in hospital on March 31, 26 (17). Daily average, 25.9. At the end of March there were 55 inmates in the Buchanan Home as compared with 52 at the same date last year. Pahiatua Hospital: In hospital on February 28, 22 (19); admitted during month, 32 (28); total under treatment, 54 (47); discharged, 39 (30); in hospital on March 31, 15 (17). Daily average, 21 (18).
