POLO IN AUSTRALIA
NEW ZEALAND TEAM MAKES GOOD START NEXT APPEARANCE AGAINST CUP HOLDERS SYDNEY, April 19. The New Zealand polo team beat the Victoria Hunt Club team by nine goals to three. For New Zealand K. Peake scored three goals, Mackenzie three, Nolan two and C. Peake one. The New Zealand team has made an excellent start in the Australasian Gold Cup polo tournament. The New Zealanders began rather indifferently, but when into their stride were much more accurate, and in the last two periods completely outplayed their opponents. The whole team did well, with K. Peake perhaps the outstanding player on the field. Nolan was invariably enterprising, while Mackenzie was sound and rarely missed chances. G. Peake, however, lacked the accuracy necessary for the number two position. The team personally is very popular and is expected to show further improvement when it gets its bearings. The speed and handiness of the New Zealand ponies evoked favourable comment.
The team's next appearance, against the cup holders, Hunter' River, is eagerly awaited. An unfortunate mishap occurred today when Nolan’s pony, Marie, lost an eye, which was knocked out by a mallet. The pony had been lent by Mr Chitty, manager of the team. Results of other games were as follow: Hunter River beat South Australia, 7-3; Queensland beat New South Wales Blues, 6-5; New South Wales Whites beat Victoria Caramut, 10-4. All the matches were of a high standard. The semi-finals will be played on Thursday.
