PIPE BAND CONTEST

WAIRARAPA COLLEGE DOES WELL. EXCELLENT STANDARD SET. The Wairarapa College Pipe Band, which competed at the New Zealand Pipe Band contest at Palmerston North during Easter put up a remarkably good performance. Its members were by far the youngest taking part in the contest, their ages ranging from 13 to 16 years. The band was handicapped by reason of the fact that Drum-Major D. Tooby was unable to fill his position on account of an injury in a motoring accident. At a moment’s notice Major J. W. Bird took over his duties and although this was the first time he had acted in such a capacity he carried out his task very successfully and deserved every credit. In the B Grade march Wairarapa made a most creditable showing being well up as far as points were concerned. Three bands were equal for first place in this event, Ruahine Highland Pipe Band, South Auckland Caledonian and Wellington Caledonian Pipe Bands, all with 265 points. Then followed Scottish Society (Auckland), 2591; New Plymouth Caledonian 256:1; Manawatu Scottish,. 255.7; Wairarapa College, 254 and Feilding Caledonian, 234 points. Similarly, in the test selection, which was played at the Opera House in the evening, Wairarapa College gave a most brilliant display. The points in this event were: South Auckland Caledonian 86; Ruahine Highland and New Plymouth, equal. 85; Manawatu Scottish, 84J; Wairarapa College, 84; Wellington Caledonian, 83; Scottish Society, 80 and Feilding Caledonian 79. It will be noted that in this event Wairarapa were within two points of the winning band's total. The drum-major's display, in which Wairarapa did not compete, resulted: Ruahine. 93:;; Manawatu, 93.1; Wellington Caledonian, 92; South Auckland, 917.
