CONDITIONS IN EIRE
REIGN OF PEACE AND PROSPERITY. A PRIEST'S IMPRESSIONS. AUCKLAND, April 15. A reign of peace and prosperity in Eire and the popularity among young people of Mr de Valera’s Government were outstanding impressions gained by the Rev. Father J. Maguire, Christchurch, and the Rev Father W. McDevitt, Dunedin, who returned by the Mariposa after a* year’s tour abroad. “Prague is one of the most beautiful cities we visited, and it is rich in historical associations,” said Father’ Maguire “Living in Czechoslovakia is very cheap, and a pair of good boots may be obtained for Bs. The people there are very patriotic and seem to be confident that nobody can take from them their independence. The peasants are very industrious, and the country is well armed.” . Referring to Austria, Father Maguire said the country was most povertystricken. They were in Austria just before the Nazi coup, and it seemed that the people expected or feared that something would happen, although the suddenness of the coup would come as a surprise. “We spent nearly five months in Ireland and found the country absolutely peaceful and prosperous,” he added. “It is one of the most peaceful and happy spots in Europe. The people there just want to be left alone to devlop the nation, and there is great enthusiasm among young people for the present regime, and they are confident its outcome wil be successful.”
