Mr Gerald Barry (Hutt), is spending Easter in Masterton. Mr Owen Jones, of Essex Street, Masterton, is spending Easter in Hastings. Mr and Mrs H. E. Pither, of Lansdowne, left for Palmerston North today, where they will attend the Pipe Band contest. Messrs S. Smith and W. White will leave next week for Sydney, where they will participate in the Returned Soldiers’ celebrations. Mr W. V. Brown, formerly manager of the Bank of N.S.W. at Masterton, who returned to Invernell, Australia, 12 months ago, was recently promoted to the managership at Lismore, N.S.W. The Rt. Rev. St. Barbe Holland, Bishop of Wellington, is the guest of Mr' and Mrs F. W. Gilligan at the Wanganui Collegiate School, during an Easter visit to Wanganui. Mr C. F. Hartland, who will leave Waipukurau shortly to take up a position in the South Island as stipendiary steward of the Racing Conference, was met recently by brother stock agents and presented with a cheque. Following a fall down a slope while mustering, Mr George Leslie Rutherford, owner of Macdonald Downs Station, died in hospital at Christchurch on Wednesday. He was regarded as an outstanding sheep farmer, and owned a number of gallopers, including the New Zealand Cup winner, Royal Star. The death has occurred of Mr W. A. C. Clarke, New Plymouth borough engineer, after a brief illness, a New Plymouth Press Association telegram states. Mr Clarke had a wide experience before taking up the New Plymouth appointment, and while employed by the borough council supervised the expenditure of approximately £250,000 in loan money, in addition to his ordinary duties. One of his principal outside interests was aviation. In the initial stages he was responsible for the'design of the airport at New Plymouth. He leaves a widow and three young children. Captain Joseph Scott, the only remaining member of the garrison of the Pukekohe East Church, which was attacked by Waikato Maoris in 1863, celebrated his hundredth birthday at Auckland yesterday. Captain Scott, who is remarkably active considering his years, came to New Zealand with his parents in 1859, when the family settled at Pukekohe East. There was established at Pukekohe East a small community of about 15 families, mostly from Ulster and Cornwall, the population, according to Captain Scott, being 25 men. 16 women and 10 children. One of their first thoughts was to build a church, and it was here that Captain Scott and his fellows fought the Maoris in 1863,
The death of Mr Cyril S. B. Rush, a member of the firm of Rush Bros., Wellington, which took place on Monday evening after a somewhat lengthy illness, removes a well known figure in outdoor sport in Wellington and the Manawatu. Mr Rush was keenly interested in Rugby football, cricket, bowling and motor cycling. His interest in motor cycle racing dated back to the early days of the sport, and he was official handicapper for several clubs, and in his younger days was a successful rider in push bicycle road races in the Manawatu and Wairarapa. He was a popular playing member of the Newtown Bowling Club. He was born at Greytown some sixty years ago. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. Mrs 11. Kelly (Auckland) and Miss Phyllis Rush (Auckland). Deceased was a son of the late Mr Robert Rush, who was for many years in business in Greytown. His mother is a resident of Palmerston North.
