GOOSE STEP IN ROME
PREPARATIONS FOR HITLER'S VISIT. The Fascist Militia is practising the “goose step” in preparation for Herr Hitler’s visit to Rome in May. This secret has been carefuly guarded until now, but it was revealed when the Duce inspected 10,000 Blackshirts, who subsequently marched past him doing the new step to his complete satisfaction. “The new parade step,” says an eyewitness, “consists in keeping the leg stiff and bringing the foot down to the ground with a sharp smack. It is to be called the Roman Step (“passo Romano”). Those who have visited Germany, however, will recognise in this description the genuine Potsdam article. The Duce was evidently delighted with the parade. As the last battalion reached the saluting point he jumped down from the platform, and, followed by Signor Starace, the Secretary cf the Fascist Party, and by General Russo, Chief of Staff of the Militia, put himself at its head and led if off the parade ground “with elastic and martial gait,” as it is recorded, “appearing thus to the crowd, which, attracted by the news of the Duce’s presence, greeted him vociferiously with their joyous and enthusiastic affection.” —The Times
