REPORTED CONSTRUCTION IN JAPAN SWIFT AND POWERFUL CRUISERS. GIANT BATTLESHIPS ALSO. By Telegraph. —Press Association, Copyright. WASHINGTON, April 12. The Navy Department has learnt that Japan is constructing a powerful “hit-and-run” fleet of super cruisers of unmatched speed, mobility and striking power. Three ships of 16,000 to 18,000 tons are being constructed. They will be armed with eight or nine 12in. guns and have a speed of forty knots.

In addition Japan is constructing three 46,000-ton dreadnoughts, five aircraft carriers, 43 destroyers, seven light cruisers, and eight submarines, a total of 66 fighting vessels, against the 46 planned by President Roosevelt.
