RENALL STREET CROSSING
STILL CONSIDERED DANGEROUS ATTITUDE OF AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION At the meeting of the Automobile Association (Wairarapa) on Tuesday night a letter was received from the Town Clerk of the Masterton Borough Council referring to the alleged dangerous condition of the Renall Street crossing in Masterton. The Association has for some time been endeavouring to impress on the Masterton Borough Council that the crossing is dangerous and have asked on several occasions that they should do something to obviate the danger. In the letter it was stated that a sub-commit-tee of the Council had already cut down five trees and the crossing was considered to be quite safe. Mr A. T. P. Hubbard a Masterton member of the Executive, said that he and his fellow members from Masterton were still of the opinion that the crossing was dangerous, and he urged that the Association should not accept the Council’s letter as final. A view of the crossing from, the west was blocked by a five-foot hedge, and it was impossible to see a train approaching. When the Masterton members had discussed the matter with a subcommittee of the Council, the Mayor had pointed out that it was possible to see a train approaching from the distance, but, said Mr Hubbard, that would be impossible from a small car, and there were large numbers of these using the roads. The view from the east was blocked by the trees, although some had been cut. To make the crossing quite safe it was desirable that the hedge should be cut to a low level, and that the trees should be removed altogether. He moved that the matter be referred to the Transport Department explaining the position and asking for an opinion. Mr D. B. Carrick seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously.
