The right' of a preserving bottle with ‘-Patent, Nov. 30, 1858,” upon it raises a question, as to how many of our readers will credit that it is 80 years since housewives could avail themselves of the screw-top jar fbr their preserves. No longer was it necessary for them to go through the tedious process of applying a circular piece of red-hot iron to the neck of an ordinary vinegar bottle and, by plunging it into cold water, cause the neck to drop oil; or, of tying wool steeped in kerosene round the neck and setting it alight, then plunging into water—two methods commonly kndwn by oui- grandmothers.
