SYDNEY, April 13. Not a great deal of interest is being displayed in the Randwick autumn carnival beginning on Saturday. This is probably due to the absence of high-class horses. John Wilkes is a doubtful starter in the Sydney Cup on Monday, and Sarcherie, who fell last Saturday, may not start either. ROSEBERY RACES. SYDNEY, April 13. The Rosebery races to-day, at which a number of Randwick candidates competed, failed to help bettors. One of the Doncaster fancies, Valbeau, was beaten into third place in the Rosebery Flying Handicap after starting a hot favourite. In fact Valbeau was considerably distressed at the finish. Deputy Ruler was second in this event. Edible ran third in the Trial Stakes and Aladdin won the first division of the Three and Four-year-old Handicap.

It is quite possible that Inver will win a sprint where the class is not good, but it is more likely that his best efforts will be recorded at longer distances. Inver has some creditable efforts to recommend him, and the indications are that he is about to stage a return to his best.

The light scale of weights adopted in connection with the Easter meetings has created a scarcity of light weight riders. The good light-weights are always scarce in numbers, and for that reason the adoption of the English idea of lifting the weights when the lowest accepting weight is 9.0 has something in its favour. The lift should, however, be proportionate. For instance, if Paladino went up 51b from 8.9 to 9.0 in the Riverton Cup, there should be a proportionate increase on those at and near the tail end of the handicap. The next few days will tell, but Kinnoull has been pleasing in his recent work and although he has an ugly looking leg he has stood up to the strain so far. The easy tracks have been in his favour and provided he goes to the post fit and well on Monday the Pink Coat horse should take a power of beating in the Great Easter Handicap. Wild Career, who won the Otautau Cup, has been off the scene since he finished a close second to Trebleback in the Southland Handicap, run at the New Year meeting. Trebleback was giving Wild Career 141 b. Wild Career, who is booked to race at Riverton and Riccarton, is a five-year-old gelding by Balboa from Full Fling, by Sonje Boy ll—Joan, by Charlemagne II— Susannah, by St. George—Nenuphar, by Apremont—Watersprite, by Traducer, and on pedigree shoud be as good as any other man’s horse.

At Riccarton Swordstick and Dictate raced abreast throughout seven furlongs in Imin 29 3-ssec, the last four in 50 3-ssec. Studley Royal was under a strong pull in covering a mile in Imin 44 l-ssec., the second half in 53 2-ssec. Happy Night just showed his head in front of Davolo, with Nightcalm half a length away, at the end

of a mile in Imin 45 2-sscc, the second half in 51 l-ssec. All went well. Rebel Lad and Mungatoon went from the mile and a quarter barrier together, and ran home the last mile in Imin 45sec, the second half in 51 4-ssec. Willie Win was timed to run nine furlongs in 2min 2sec, the last four' in 53sec.

F. Smith has been working his Champagne Stakes candidates, Hot Box and Arvakur, in company, and Hot Box usually finishes in front. There is such a thing as horses loafing in their work, but public form suggests the likelihood of Hot Box being the better of the pair at six furlongs.

The Great Northern Oaks to be run at Ellerslie on. Saturday is generally regarded as a race between Icing and Glenogil. Glenogil has fair form and may stay fairly well, but Icing’s winin the . Earle Stakes at Wanganui and her third in the Awapuni Gold Cup to Stretto and Royal Chief is easily the best public performance of any of the candidates and she will be favourite.
