“THE AWFUL TRUTH”

REGENT'S EASTER ATTRACTION. Without doubt one of the best modern comedies coming from American studios for a long time, “The Awful Truth” will be the Easter attraction at the Regent Theatre. Irene Dunne once "went wild” as Theodora, and in this Columbia picture an extraordinarily successful adaptation by Vina Delmar of a play by Arthur Richman, she is every bit as full of joyous nonsense as she was in “Theodora Goes Wild.’ With her are Cary Grant and Ralph Bellamy. The attractive, dignified Miss Dunne joins with Cary Grant in uttering “awful truths” in the heartiest manner. The story concerns a wealthy young married couple who get a 60-day interlocutory divorce decree while in a huff following a smoll domestic "till,” but manage, after a series of amusing complications, to invalidate it by mutual consent and co-operation a split second before midnight on the sixtieth day. After the divorce, and when her husband is about to marry again, the wife drops in on the respected family of his future wife and gives an exhibition which is as surprising as it is amusing. "The Awful Truth’’ has been made for laughter. Much of the hilarity comes from the clever dialogue between Cary Grant and Irene Dunne, which is amusing in the extreme. As the divorced husband, with the right of access to the family dog, “Mr Smith,” Cary Grant gets every ounce of comedy out of every situation. “The Awful Truth” provides a grand role for Ralph Bellamy. He is the man whom Irene Dunne thinks she might marry.

The shorts are also outstanding, including two colour subjects, a Rhapsody and Cartoon, a sports thrill and latest overseas news.
