RATANA DISASTER
— BOARD OF INQUIRY OPENED. ENGINEER'S EVIDENCE. By Telegraph—Press Association. V/ANGANUI. This Day. The board of inquiry into the Ra tana derailment opened today. G. J. Bcrtinshaw, chief engineer of the maintenance branch, said that lie could see no sign of any obstruction having been on the line. Them nothing connected wth the condition of the permanent way which could have caused the accident. A train similar io the excursion passed over the same section of t!; ■ ih about three-quarters of an hour be fore lhe derailment. There iiad been four previous derailments on that curve. The enquiry is proceeding.
