SETTLEMENT SOUGHT
STATUS OF ABYSSINIA
BRITISH NOTE TO LEAGUE. OPPOSITION EXPECTED. By Telegraph.—Press Association, Copyright. LONDON, April 12. Britain has sent a Note to the League asking that the question of Abyssinia be settled at the meeting of the League Council on May 1. The Geneva correspondent of “The Times” expresses the opinion that Britain’s Abyssinian move is likely to encounter opposition from the Chinese and Soviet Governments and also from the Central American States, especially in view of the Stimson declaration providing for non-recogni-tion of any situation created by force. The question is also being raised whether the Council of the Assembly is the proper body to take the initiative.
The diplomatic correspondent of the “Daily Herald” points out that any resolution releasing member States from their obligations not to recognise the Abyssinian annexation must be unanimous, otherwise it would be invalid.
ITALY IN CONTROL STATEMENT IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS. SITUATION ON FRONTIERS NORMAL. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, April 11. Answering a question in the House of Commons on the state of Abyssinia, the Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mr R. A. Butler, said there appeared to be no appreciable change in the situation in Abyssinia since Sir John Simon replied to similar questions on February 21. “My information is that the Italian authorities are in military control of virtually the whole country,” he said. ■“Resistance to Italian authority appears to be unorganised and of a local character and to be confined to Western Abyssinia.
“On the frontiers of Abyssinia the situation is normal and the status quo has been maintained.”
