BOROUGH WORK
REPORTS FOR PAST MONTH. At last night's meeting of the Masterton Borough Council the Borough Engineer, Mr C. R. Mabson, reported as follows on work carried out during the past month: — Streets: South Road kerbing from Short Street to Millard Avenue has been completed. The Terrace kerbing on the south side between Opaki Road and King Edward Street has been completed, and a start has been made in Chapel Street on the east side from Renall Street to the Makora Creek. Dixon Street kerbing east side from the Memorial Park gates to Herbert Street has been completed. Oxford Street roadway has been regraded from Opaki Road to the end, and a start has been made with the metalling ' from the Opaki Road end. Colombo Road footpath on the east side from Johnstone Street to the Makora Creek is being regraded approximately 10 chs. being ready for sanding. Five footpaths have been re-surfaced with bitumen. The Waipoua River diversion scheme is progressing satisfactorily, the whole of the men and teams being concentrated on removing spoil from under the Colombo Road bridge and the bed of the river below at present. Surplus spoil from the river is being deposited in the Church Street gravel pit. The total quantity of spoil handled to date is 31,421 c. yds. Building permits: —During the month 8 permits were issued, having an estimated value of £3343 ss, the fees thereon amounting to £l3 ss. For the corresponding period last year 6 permits were issued having an estimated value of £1492 ss. The totals for the year ending March 31, 1933, and the previous year are as follows: —1938, Number of permits, 126; total value, £54,920 2s; value, £23,354; 1937: 119 permits; total value, £61,188 6s; value, £32,505.
BOROUGH INSPECTOR'S REPORT. The Gas Engineer-Manager, Mr J. Russell, reported as follow: —Notifiable infectious disease:. Five cases of diphtheria and one case of pulmonary tuberculosis were notified during March. The diphtheria cases were institutional and contacts of a previous case. Milk supply: The usual milk samples were taken for general analysis, and nine supplying farms visited. Food premises: The inspection of all licensed food premises has been completed. Applications for licences have been received from three aerated water, cordial and essence manufacturers, 15 bakers, 11 butchers, 12 dairymen, 24 eatinghouse proprietors, 5 fish retailers. Hairdressers: The hairdressing establishments have also been inspected and as the premises are in order I respectfully recommend that the 13 applicants be granted a licence. Traffic: Heavy traffil fees for the month amounted to £563 15s sd. Twenty-six applicants for’ drivers’ licenses were examined, three failing to pass the test. Nine persons were prosecuted for breaches of traffic regulations, a conviction and line being secured in each case.
GAS MANAGER'S REPORT. The Gas Engineer-Manager, Mr fJ. Douglas, reported as follows: —Gas manufactured: The total gas made, corrected N.T.P., was 4,180,500 c. ft., being an increase of 242,000 c. ft. or 9 per cent over the corresponding period of last year. Gas sold per meter shows an increase of 8 per cent.
