AKITIO
COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING. (“Times-Age" Special.) The monthly meeting of the Akitio County Council was held in the Council Chambers, Pongaroa, on Monday, the chairman (Councillor R. B. Robertson) presiding. Mr N. H. Sinclair, of Palmerston North, representing the estate of the late Francis Robbie, wrote advising that he had been in communication with the Hon. R. Semple regarding obtaining :i bettor access to the property via. the Waihoki Road, and quoted portion of Mr Semple’s reply. ’ which read as follows: "With an ex- ■ penditure of somewhere in the vicin- 1 ity of £1560 in metalling 11 miles of the road two interested settlers could be given metalled access. For the present, however, the Estimates of my Department do not provide for any expenditure on Waihoki Road and at the same time it does not seem that the interested County Council could make .a contribution towards the cost just now. In the circumstances I am deferring the
question for a review on the .next Estimates, which will come down in the course of a few months' time and if the Council is then prepared to. make an application for a grant I will be pleased to consider providing funds on a subsidy basis.” Mr Sinclair asked that the Council do something when framing their estimates to provide for the metalling.'—The Council decided to apply for the necessary grant io do the work when dealing with the
estimates. The New Zealand County Councils’ Industrial Union of Employers advised, in answer to an enquiry from the Council, that eight hours could be worked on either Saturday or Sunday in the case of emergency work.
Mr P. 11, Donovan, of Pongaroa, applied for a renewal of his billiard room licence, which was granted. The State Advances Corporation of New Zealand advised that they could advance loan moneys on terms approved by the Council for the Read Metalling Loan, £l9OO, and Bridges Loan, £BOO. Messrs Smith and Donovan Services, Ltd., asked for permission to shift and instal a petrol tank. —The request was granted, subject to all regulations being observed.
The County ranger (Mr R. J. J. Scott) advised that he had impounded 21 head of cattle and that 745 dogs had been registered to date.
Councillor Gray asked that more metal be put on the Waihoki as it was in particularly bad condition. Councillor Hall reported that one of the hand-rails were oil the bridge on the Range Road,.-and asked the engineer to have same repaired.
Councillor Hall asked if the County was getting royalty on the cartage of logs from Pickett's to Pahiatua and in reply the engineer said that they were not charging royalty on main highways.
Councillor Hall said there was a 10l of parking on the wrong side of the road at night and without lights. The engineer said a glaring example was the recent dog trials. Councillor Hal! said in his opinion this had not been so bad but the parking of big lorries at night on the wrong side of the read without lights was serious. The engineer was instructed to serve u.dices on any offenders. COLLECTION .OF RATES. At Monday's meeting of the Akilio County Council the County frersurcr. Mr S. W.
