CRASH INTO POLE
PASSENGER DIES FROM INJURIES. By Telegraph—Press Association. INVERCARGILL, April 11. John Wilfred Hayes, aged 34, linesman employed at Otautau Post Office, died in Riveaton Hospital this afternoon from injuries received in a motor accident near Waihoaka about 8.30 on Sunday evening.
A motor-car driven by Clarence Hibbs, aged 34, Otautau, left the Tautapere road at Ford’s Hill, near Waihoaka, and crashed into an electric power pole. The driver’s wife, Mrs Phyllis Hibbs, was in the front seat and Mr Hayes was in the back seat. Mr Hayes was flung out of the car and was found some 15 or 20 yards away. He received a fractured spine. He was a married man with a family of foul. Mrs Hibbs received a fracture of the left leg and dislocation of the right leg and, together with Mr Hibbs, who was suffering from abrasions and shock, was removed to the Riverton Hospital. The condition of Mrs Hibbs is fairly satisfactory and that of Mr Hibbs satisfactory.
