CHINESE VICTORY

CONTINUED PROGRESS IN DRIVE TOWARDS SHANGHAI Japanese Reinforcements Hurried to Battle Front COOLIE LABOUR CONSCRIPTED TO BUILD FORTIFICATIONS (Recd This l?ay, 10.5 s.m.) SHANGHAI, April 11. Recent events support Chinese claims to victory. Chinese forces, both regular and guerrilla, are within 25 miles of Shanghai, all efforts of the normal Japanese garrisons from Shanghai and Hangchow having failed to stem them. Ten thousand fresh Japanese troops landed at Pootung on Saturday and marched to reinforce the front west and south-west of Shanghai, where the Japanese are hurriedly conscripting coolie labour to build fortifications. A message from Hankow states that the Chinese claim to have captured Chinihwang and Changstan.
