PERSONAL.

Mr G. W. Busby, of Carterton, acting upon medical advice, has found it necessary to enter the Masterton Hospital for treatment. A Greymouth Press Association message states that the death has occurred of Mr Michael Keating, clerk of the Grey County Council, after a short illness, at the age of 52. The Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Public Works, arrived at Christchurch on Saturday morning. He laid the foundation stone of the new building for the Municipal Electricity Department yesterday, and last night he addressed a public meeting at Rangiora. The Minister will be engaged on departmental business today.

Mr W. H. Cocker has been elected president of the Auckland University College Council, to fill the vacancy created by the death of the late president, Mr H. J. D. Mahon. Mi - Cocker who has been a member of the council for many years as graduates’ representative, is also a member of the New Zealand University Senate. Mr Cocker is a member of the Auckland legal firm of Hesketh, Richmond, Adams and Cocker. He is a son of the late Rev J. Cocker, and Mrs Cocker, of Masterton.

The promotion to the position of District Traffic Manager of Railways at Wellington of Mr W. A. Woodger, assistant traffic manager at Auckland, is announced. Mr Woodger entered the railway service 38 years ago at Wellington and has filled various positions in the service in the North Island. He went to Auckland 14 years ago as chief train-running officer. In former days Mr Woodger was a prominent amateur athlete. In 1909 he was New Zealand and Amateur sprint champion, winning the latter title at Brisbane. Two years later he was the sprinter in the New Zealand team for the British Empire Games in London. For some time he resided in Masterton where in addition to being a well-known runner, he was a Wairarapa representative cricketer, being an exceptionally good bowler. He played for the Star Club.
