Round Up was responsible for two impressive efforts at the last Paeroa meeting, and in his present form would command respect in any race selected for him-at the Easter meeting at Ellerslie. His most recent successes have been scored over middle distances, but the Lord Quex gelding appeals as one likely to run out a very solid mile, as he possesses the necessary ability to begin smartly and take up a good position early. There is no doubt as to his dash at the end of his races. For these reasons Round Up might be selected as a potential Easter Handicap winner. His earnings this season exceed £2OOO. Four yearlings have arrived at Chokebore from the Stonyhurst Stud. They comprise Gay Hind, a filly by Magnus from Winsome Hind; Great Swoop, a colt by Magnus from Swoopalong; Winning Rival, a filly by Bulandshar from Rivalry, and Jameaux Ravine, a filly by Winning Hit from Brave Deed. A failure at the Ohinemuri meeting. Valamito looks none the worse for recent exertions, and there seems no suggestion of his feeling the strain of a fairly busy season. Despite the fact that the Vaals gelding has a good record this season, he has at times proved disappointing, but at his best he commands respect in any race he contests. Valamito will probably sport silk next at the Auckland meeting shortly. The Dead Sea gelding Tangled, who is top weight in the Great Western Steeplechase, won the Manawatu Hunt Club Steeplechase last season. He then came down to the Grand National meeting and won the Hunt Cup and the Aylesbury Steeplechase 11.7 from Arctic Star 10.7. Tangled afterwards ran third in the Waikato Hunt Cup. decided in heavy going.

Galleon, Silver Streak, and Dictate, top-weights in the Riverton Cup, who dropped out at the acceptances, are engaged at Riccarton. Milford is amiss, and the other absentees from the original field could not be granted much hope of success. F. A. Robert has received two more of Mr H. D. Greenwood's young horses. A two-year-old black filly by Night Raid from Egotism, broken in a year ago, has been spelling since then and is ready now to start on a preparation for next season’s racing. A yearling filly by Posterity from Cymene is a bay. She is a half-sister to Cylinder and Cyrillian, and the work of breaking her in will be started immediately. Paladino, who is now top-weight in the Riverton Cup, has started 11 times this season for five wins, three seconds and a third. Amelita 7.3 beat Paladino 8.6 in the Winton Cup. Paladino 8.10 won over a mile on the second day, when Amelita 8.5 got badly away. At the Birchwood meeting Ocean Singer 7.21 won from Amelita 8.0, with Paladino 9.3. In the Riverton Cup Paladino meets Amelita on 91b. better terms. At Riccarton Sovereign Lady and Wild Chase started off at the mile and a quarter post, and raced abreast throughout, although the former appeared to be going the better at the finish. The time for the full distance was 2min. 12secs.. the last mile taking Imin. 43' 3-ssecs., and the last half-mile 53secs. B. H. Morris has been engaged to ride Sovereign Lady in the Great Autumn Handicap, and will fly down from north on the morning of the race. Wild Chase has done exceptionally well of late, and should give a good account of himself in both big handicaps.

Swordstick is galloping well at present and put up a smart six furlongs on Tuesday by beating Financiere in lmin. 1G l-ssecs. Tlie jumper AH Irish is standing up to his work in a satisfactory manner at Ellerslie and reports say he is gradually hardening in condition. So far his tasks have been fairly easy, and it will be interesting to see how he fares when his preparation becomes more serious. There arc few more reliable jumpers than All Irish, and if he survives a winding-up test there will be plenty of opportunities for him during the jumping season. Glenogil is expected to leave Riccarton today en route to Auckland, where she will fulfil an engagement in the Great Northern Oaks, in which her main opponent is seemingly the good filly Icing. The trainer. F. Christmas, announces Glenogil will be ridden by R. McTavish, who rode her half-brother, Red Heckle, to win the Great Northern Derby of 1929, in addition to the winning ride on Martarma a year earlier. Ruletto is said to have never looked better and her work on the tracks is of a high standard. It is understood that her next appearance in public will be at the Auckland Easter meeting. Al th ought the Easter plans for Oratory and Catalogue have not been completed, it is likely that both will be racing at Feilding and not at Ellerslie. Reports from Hawera indicate that Lowenberg has been lame behind since racing at Stratford, and his trip to Riccarton is now considered very unlikely. Bachelor King’s consistent failures

during recent meetings have left his admirers lamenting, and the Lapidary gelding will have to improve on his recent efforts before he can be regarded with any degree of confidence. It is possible that the hard nature of the ground which has been experienced for some considerable time may be proving a deterrent to this gelding hitting out with his customary freedom, but whatever the cause he has certainly lost a lot of friends through his recent lapse of form.
