SOUTHERN DROUGHT
CHEAP CONVEYANCE OB' STOCK BY RAIL
Consequent upon the exceptional drought prevailing in Southland and South Otago, the Department of Agriculture has made arrangements with the Railways Department by which [live-stock in the stricken areas may be [conveyed to districts whore feed is [more abundant at reduced rates. Stock [removed for depasturing purposes will be conveyed by rail at half rates on both the homeward and outward jourIneys. The consignors of such livestock will be required to furnish a special certificate in support of the 'transfer, and the completion of another type of certificate will entitle jeonsignors or consignees to the free [carriage of fodder consigned to stations in the Southland and South I Otago districts until further notice. ,lThe concessions thus obtained for ■farmers and other owners of livestock in the drought-affected areas will [doubtless be greatly appreciated as they will not only relieve farmers of ja heavy financial burden, but will also be the means of saving the lives of numbers of valuable animals.
