HOUSING LOANS
DUNEDIN COUNCIL SCHEME. DUNEDIN, April 8. A recommendation that the council should take action to obtain a third housing loan of £lOO,OOO is contained in a report of the finance committee to be presented to the. city council on Monday night. Almost all the £200,000 already raised has been absorbed. A survey of the progress made with the council’s housing scheme discloses the fact that 144 contracts for the erection of dwellings have been let, involving a total expenditure of £166,951, states the report. Of this number, 80 houses are already occupied. Negotiations are also in progress with a further 28 applicants and, when these are completed, all the £200,000 already authorised will have been allotted. In addition there are 125 more applications-still to be dealt with.
“It is clear, therefore,” the report adds, “that a further loan will be needed if these applications are to be met and provision made for any further applications that may come in. The committee accordingly recommends that authority be granted to take the necessary steps to obtain sanction to raising of a third loan for housing purposes of £100,000.”
