There were few cases of lack of consideration for the brigade on the part of Napier motorists, said Superintendent J. Gilbcrd, of the Napier Fire Brigade. It was possible that some motorists were not aware that the fine engine had the right of way, and there were occasional cases where motorists did not assist as much as they might. When this right of way was not given, the superintendent added, he had no hesitation in taking the offender’s number and bringing a prosecution. So far he had had to bring only a few cases before the court. These had deterred other possible offenders, he said. Another instance of this lack of consideration was shown when motorists wilfully drove over the fire hoses in use at a fire. This was a destructive practice, he said, and offenders were not lightly treated.
