BRITISH BY-ELECTION
LABOUR PARTY GAIN IN WEST FULHAM. LONDON, April 7. The West Fulham by-election to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Sir Cyril Cobb resulted: Dr Edith Summerskill (Labour). 16,583; C. J. Busby (Conservative) , 15,162. This is a Labour gain. SURPRISE RESULT VIEWS OF THE OPPOSING PARTIES (Recd This Day, 9.35 a.m.) LONDON, April 7. The Australian Associated Press says the result at West Fulham, the first byelection since Mr Eden's resignation and the Austrian coup, is a surprise to Government members, who expected to retain the seat with a reduced majority. However the Ministerialists consider that Labour’s majority is 100 small to constitute a rebuff to Mr Chamberlain's policy, but the “Daily Herald,” in a leader, claims that it is a crushing reply to Mr Chamberlain, and is a forerunner to a movement to drive the Government from office.
