TE WHARAU

GOLF SEASON OPENED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The official opening of the 1938 golf season took place on Saturday afternoon, there being a representative gathering from neighbouring clubs including visitors from the Tyneside, Stronvar, Tinui, Hutt and Lansdowne clubs. In welcoming the visitors the president (Mr S. Gray) referred to the improvements to the links which had been carried out during the recess, and he expressed the hope that those would have a good afternoons golf.

Messrs Harold and Jack Black, of Wellington, gave an exhibition round of nine holes after which a mixed foursome was played, the winners being Mrs. J. Black and Mr. W. Kummer. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies and a most enjoyable days golf came to a close.

The next playing day has been fixed for April 10 when a stroke competition will be played. The draw will take place at the clubhouse at 1.30. New players are requested to send their names to the secretary before that date. SERVICES RECOGNISED. On Saturday evening last an enjoyable dance was held in the local hall, at which a presentation was made to Miss McKinstry and Mr I. McGregor who are to be married shortly. The hall was packed with friends and well-wishers and before the supper adjournment Mr. S. Gray, in a few well chosen words, referred to the services to the district rendered by the guests of the evening, stating that they could not let the occasion pass without recognising such services. On behalf of the residents of the district he presented them with a canteen of cutlery.

Mr. lan McGregor suitably replied?
