“BIRTHDAY PARTY”
CELEBRATION IN AUSTRALIA DESCRIBED. ROTARY CLUB ADDRESS. “A gigantic birthday party,” was the description given to the Australian Sequicentennial festivities and celebrations by Mr. C. E. Critchley, Australian Trade Commissioner in New Zealand in an interesting address at today’s luncheon of the Masterton Rotary Club. The president, Rotarian C. R. Mabson, presided, and the speaker, on concluding, was accorded a hearty vote of thanks on the motion of Rotarian P. F. Fagan. In Australia, observed Mr. Critchley, it was believed that the most important feature of the celebrations was the commemoration of the growth of the Commonwealth into nationhood. The rapid progress that had been made from nothing probably was' without parallel in the history of the world. Mr. Critchley went to paint a graphic picture of the celebrations depicting the various stages of Australia’s development from the date of the landing of Captain Phillip at Sydney Cove. He mentioned in passing that in the ten years following the discovery of gold in 1850, the population increased from 400,000 to a million and a half.
