EDUCATION PROPOSALS

PRIVATE SECONDARY SCHOOLS. EVIDENCE ON BEHALF OF PRINCIPALS. By. Telegraph.—Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 7. The views of non-State secondary schools on the Education Amendment Bill were placed before the Education Committee today by Mr N. Gibson, representing an association of heads or registered secondary schools. Mr Gibson expressed the hope that nothing would be done to reduce individual freedom in the curricula of individual State and non-State primary schools. Greater freedom should be allowed secondary schools. He considered that adequate training of primary school teachers should include attendance of university lectures and thought it wise to establish training colleges at university centres only. The principal of a school should continue to have a considerable share in the selection of a staff. The Association desired that the registration of non-State schools should be done by the Education Department and not by a local board, and appreciated the committee’s recognition of religious instruction. The sitting is proceeding.
