SOUTH ISLAND RAILWAY

PROGRESS OF CONSTRUCTION

LINE NEARING KAIKOURA

BLENHEIM, This Day. Construction work on the northern section of the South Island main trunk railway has reached within two miles of Kaikoura, which is a point roughly midway between Blenheim and Christchurch. The scope of operations now extends over a length of forty miles of route on this section alone.

Men engaged on all classes of work total 410. This is a reduction of 40 compared with five months ago. The falling off in staff is due to disposal of employees to other work, the majority of the men operating between Clarence River, where a large bridge is being constructed, and Kaikoura.
