GAY NIGHT FOR SCHOLARS.
FANCY DRESS AWARDS. About five hundred children, in addition to a large number of parents, assembled in the Central school last night when an excellent programme of folk dancing, etc, was presented, and the annual fancy dress competitions held. The arrangements for the function were complete in every detail, thanks to the 'excellent work of the Parent's Association, and Mr E. G. Coddington and his staff. Supper was provided for the adults as well as every child, an undertaking which was carried out most efficiently by the ladies’ committee, assisted by members of the men's committee. The folk dancing, items by the mouth organ band, a solo dance by Valmai Price and a mouth organ solo by Fred Knott, were excellently rendered and warmly applauded. The judges of the fancy and other costumes (Mesdames B. Iveson and M. Hornblow, Wellington), made the following awards, which were received with loud applause:-— Primers:—"Fish,” Shirley Nicol; “Clown,” George Thorburn; “Coster,” Ralph Judd; “Coronation,” Dorothy Cocker; special prize for child not attending school, “Pea Pod,” Irene Foster.
Standards 1 and 2:—“Tree,” E. Price 1; “Mickey Mouse” and “Minnie Mouse,” Trevor Grantham and — Sayer, equal 2; special donated by Mrs B. Iveson, "Golliwog,” Noeline Spackman. Standards 3 and 4:—“Early Victorian,” Adeline Emerson 1; “Swagger,” Jack Hodges 2; special prize donated by Mrs B. Iveson, “Hawaiian Dancer,” Nanette Broom.
Standards 5 and 6: —“Granny,” Jocelyn Murdock 1; “Early Victorian,” Dorothy Heckler 2. Paper Costume: — “Sunflower,” V. Price 1; “Grass,” Elaine Brown 2. Most economical: —“Absent <Minded Professor,” Jim Boyce 1; “Topsy,” Stella Pauling 2. Special prize, “Indian,” Raymond Floyd. Most original:—“Weet-Bix,” Neil Loader 1; Wireless Set,” Leo Coley 2.
At the conclusion of the function hearty cheers were given by the children for the judges, the school staff, the Parent’s Association and the electrician (Mr Butler). Mr W. R. Nicol, a member of the Wellington Education Board, expressed the appreciation of the Parent’s Association for the splendid support accorded to the function that evening, and thanked all those who had assisted to make it the success it was.
