Commander R. T. Bower collapsed after a visit to the House of Commons and his doctors advised him to spend a week in bed. His wife, says he is seeking legal advice ( regarding the slapping incident. The Speaker of the House'of Commons (Captain E. A. Fitz Roy) said he wished for future guidance to give a considered opinion on the incident, which was of the gravest character, lowering the House’s reputation throughout the world.. A similar offensive in future would not occur without fear of punishment..
It was reported in a cablegram yesterday that a Labour member of the House of Commons (Mr. E. Shinwell) angered by a taunt from Commander Bower, crossed the floor and gave Commander Bower, who is a naval officer and a boxing champion, a resounding slap on the face. The Speaker said he would ignore the incident if each member apologised. This the members did.
