PACIFIC SHIPPING

DOUBTS CAST ON EARLY REPORT

SCHEME STILL HELD UP PENDING CANADIAN DECISION. (Recd This Day, 12.55 p.m.) LONDON, April 5. The Australian Associated Press says that in connection with the reported order for Pacific ships British Government quarters are not aware that orders are imminent. As far as is known here the position remains as on March 16. The scheme is held up pending the Canadian decision, first requiring legislation to enable the Canadian Government to make a financial contribution. Even if legislation is passed it is doubted if the ships will be 30,000 tonners, because, apart from the increasing costs of shipbuilding, the original scheme did not provide for ships of that size.
