LATE CABLES. BID FOR SETTLEMENT

MOVE BY PRIME MINISTER OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA PROBLEM OF THE SUDETEN GERMANS. HITLER MAKING MEDIATION DIFFICULT. (Recd This Day, 12.10 p.m.) LONDON, April 5. The Australian Associated Press understands that the Prime Minister of Czechoslovakia, Dr. M. Hodza, is making renewed attempts to settle the Sudeten German problem and shortly will be submitting proposals to the English and French Governments. ■lt is gathered that this initiative is a sequel to Mr. Neville Chamberlain’s pronouncements in the House of Commons, when he expressed a hope that the problem might be settled by friendly mediation between the parties. However, the outcome of it is doubtful, since Herr Hitler insists that, the Sudeten Germans, in common with all other German nationals, must be completely under his banner. Meanwhile, European chancelleries are closely watching Memel, the Nazification of which is proceeding apace. The impression is that Memel soon will go Austria’s way. RELIEF OF DISTRESS ADDITIONAL EXPENDITURE IN SUDETEN AREAS (Recd This Day, 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, April 5. The “Daily Telegraph’s” Prague correspondent says the Government proposes to spend an extra £3,500,000 to provide work in the distressed Sudeten areas and to contribute to Czech-Ger-man appeasement.
