FARMERS’ UNION

PAHIATUA WOMEN’S DIVISION. The following review on the year 1937-38 will be presented at the annual general meeting of the Pahiatua branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union: —

“The committee has pleasure in reporting that again we have had a very successful year. Our membership now stands at 100, and the financial position is quite sound as revealed in the balance-sheet. Our housekeepers have fulfilled 16 positions in the district this year and there were a great number of calls we were not able to answer. The Arts and Crafts display which was sponsored by the organisation and the Education Board was outstandingly successful and the experience gained will stand us in good stead this year. We also assisted the local Calf Club by serving luncheon on the judging day and our effort was appreciated. Our revenue was helped by a shop held in December and by dances, donations, etc. The annual ball though not so financially successful as that of the previous year, was in every way a notable and happy gathering. The average attendance at our monthly meetings has shown a slight increase, but we would like to see more members make the effort to attend. This also applies to the social afternoons. We have had excellent addresses from Mrs Barrer, Mrs H. Paterson, and Mrs Duncan Simpson, while Miss Tylee gave a delightful illustrated lecture. Our birthday party was well attended despite dreadful weather, and there was a good attendance of representatives from other branches.

“We regret to record the death during the year of three valued members of the Division, Mesdames H. Kelsey, S. Bolton and A. Shekleton, these ladies having been foundation members. In conclusion we wish to thank all who have put their shoulder to the wheel and have done so much to make the work go forward, especially mentioning Mrs W. F. Day whose able and business-like guidance has enhanced the value of our organisation and Mrs J. Gibson whose onerous duties as housekeepers’ secretary and treasurer have been most faithfully performed. “Thanks are also due to Mr J. B. Tait (hon. auditor), Mrs East and Mr J. A. Walsh, the Press and the County Council for the free use of the meeting room.
