DAMAGE TO CROPS

TURNIPS AND SWEDES AFFECTED NEAR MASTERTON. FORM OF SOFT ROT BACTERIA. Several turnip and swede crops in the Matahiw'i and Kaituna areas have become affected with a somewhat obscure and little-known form of rot, which in some cases is quite serious. Four crops in this area have been seriously damaged, and two can be regarded as an almost total loss. The only explanation offered by the Plant Research Bureau is that the trouble is brought on by some soil condition, possibly induced by the excessive heat, as the result of .which the skin-of the root is injured just below the surface of the ground. This lets in soft rot bacteria, which eventually causes the tap root to rot away. The disease has been known to occur on previous occasions in excessively hot seasons.
