VILLAGE MYSTERY
“DEATH WITHIN A WEEK.”
Police officers are keeping a day and night watch on a house in the little village of Northiam, near Rye, Sussex, following the receipt of letters threatening two people with “Death within a week.”
The letters, received by Mr. and Mrs J. Ransley and Mrs Ponhill, were signed “The Black Hand Gang,” and were printed on notepaper. Mr. J. W. Archer, of Northiam post office, stated: —
“The general feeling in the village is that they are the work of a schoolboy, but the people who received them do not feel too happy. Mrs. Ransley is in bed through worrying about the letters, and her three children have gone to stay with relatives until the author is found.
“A queer thing about it is that Mr and Mrs Ransley, about a week ago, received one of the letters, which said that their house would be burnt down.
The next day a shed at the back of the house caught fire, but little damage was done.”
