YOUTH OF TODAY
(To The Editor.) Sir, —What is the matter with the youth of today? I do not mean after working hours, or on the sports field, but whilst he is at work. Where is the loyal, efficient, keen, self-reliant youth we had ten or even five years ago? I have macle it my business recently, to study this subject very closely, and have made numerous enquiries from employers in this town and in Wellington. On all sides I get the same reports. That the youth in whom they used to place such reliance is fast disappearing if not altogether gone. There are of course, exceptions, thank goodness. What is the cause of it? I wonder if I am correct in placing the blame on compulsory unionism. I think so. Nowadays it seems as if the workers’ slogan is "How little work can I do and how much pay can I get for it?” All responsibility (irrespective of whose it is) is pushed on to those in an executive position, such as managers, foremen, etc. What will be the outcome of it all in the years to come? Wake up youth. Get your backs into it and remember the men who try to do something and fail, are infinitely better than those who try to do nothing and succeed. I am. etc, "THE WATCHER.” Masterton, April 2.
