EDUCATION BILL
HEARING OF COMMITTEE OPENED VIEWS OF SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ ASSISTANTS WELLINGTON, This Day. The hearing by a Select Committee of evidence in the Education Amendment Bill began this morning at Parliament Buildings, the Rev. C. Carr, M.P., presiding. The proceedings were open to the Press and public. Evidence was taken today from Messrs H. A. Heron, president; and A. H. Thom, hon secretary, of the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Assistants’ Association, which approved a reduction of the number of governing bodies and the inclusion of teachers on education boards. In regard to school councils the Association was divided in opinion, but a majority of members approved the functions of the proposed councils, but asked for a clearer definition of the rights of a council in connection with making appointments of teachers. The Association approved the appointment of local education officers with the board areas and the raising of the school leaving age to 15.
