LATE CABLES.

CHAMBERLAIN’S DAY

LABOUR PARTY RIDICULED & TWITTED DEBATE ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS IN COMMONS. PRIME MINISTER GETS OVATION. By Telegraph. —Press Association. (Recd This Day, noon). LONDON, April 4. In the House of Commons debate on Foreign policy, the Prime Minister (Mr. Neville Chamberlain) taunted Mr A. Greenwood (Labour) with speaking for over an hour without once mentioning a general election, which was the motive of the Labour Party’s censure motion, and followed by bluntly telling the Labour Party that nothing would carry greater consternation into their ranks than a general election. Many members of the Labour Party regarded a censure motion at this stage as bad tactics politically, and consequently did hot take the debate seriously, while Government supporters were witnessing Mr Chamberlain give a debating performance worthy of his father at his best. The House gave him an ovation lasting for five minutes, one of the most remarkable demonstrations for years.

Early speeches in the debate are reported on page 7.
