YOUTH DROWNED
FATALITY IN MANAWATU RIVER VICTIM’S BROTHER REACHES SAFETY By Telegraph.—Press Association. LEVIN, April 4. While ’ bathing in the Manawatu River yesterday afternoon, near Whirokino bridge, Nepia Tamihana, 17, was drowned. In company with other youths, Tamihana swam about 75 yards to the centre of the river ‘and after resting on a bridge pile he returned to the shore. He was persuaded by his young brother to accompany him out to the bridge pile for a second time. The tide was on the ebb and the river was flowing fairly fast. The pair had covered about fifty yards, when Tamihana found .the second trip too much for him, while the younger brother was carried down the river by the current. They called for assistance. A youth, Eric Jones, dived in and reached the younger boy. Together they were carried 200 yards down the river towards the bank, where they were assisted from the water. Meantime, Nepia Tamihana had disappeared. His elder brother dived in a number of times, but could find no trace of him. The body had not been recovered this morning.
