CARTERTON

ODDFELLOWS’ LODGE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The fortnightly meeting of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge of Oddfellows (Manchester Unity) was held at Carterton last evening. *Bro R. J. Fisher, N.G., presiding. Several members are on the sick benefit fund and-reports on their progress was received from the sick visitors. The District Grand Master (Sister E. McFarlane) wrote acknowledging a letter of congratulation from Heart of Oak lodge and stating she would later pay a visit to the Carterton lodge. The ritual examiners (Bros J. H. Langley and C. J. De Lacey) reported on the recent ritual examination and stated they had awarded Heart of Oak as the winners of the competition. It was decided to visit Loyal Eketahuna lodge on Saturday evening next when a number of Oddfellows from Carterton and Masterton will make the trip.

PERSONAL. Mr. and Mrs. James Lindsay, and Mrs. E. M. Laurie, of Wellington, are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Boyne, Carterton. NATIONAL PARTY. I The Carterton branch of the N.Z. National Party will hold a dance at the State Ballroom on Thursday evening, when the best of appointments are promised to patrons, including a full dance orchestra. Popular prices are advertised, and euchre players will be admitted at a charge of Is only.

CARTERTON MAYORALTY.

MR TAVERNER TO STAND AGAIN.

In response to the request of an influential deputation, the Mayor of Carterton, Mr D. L. Tavener, has consented to again accept nomination for the office. The deputation was arranged at short notice, otherwise a much large number of business men and ratepayers would have attended. The speakers, Messrs W. Vaughan, W. Howard Booth, Councillors E. McKenzie and C. J. De Lacey, expressed the opinion that it was the general wish that Mr Taverner should be re-elected for a further term, as he had carried out the duties of Mayor with dignity and to the complete satisfaction of burgesses.

CARNIVAL DANCE. The Carnival Dance held at the State Ballroom last night was a bumper success, there being a very enthusiastic attendance of dancers. A special “Chain Waltz” was held in ' order to introduce the Carterton Queen, Miss Zena Freer, to all the ladies. The competition for the doll was won by Mrs Moorcock (Carrington), while Mrs Daysh (Carrington) won the pyjamas. The supper arrangements were ably controlled .by Messrs Kruse and N. Williams. BOWLING CLUB COMPETITIONS.The following further games have been played in the Carterton Club’s handicap pairs:— Kilmister and Callender (s) beat McPherson and J. G. Stevens (s) 22-20. Steven (sub.) and Sorenson (s) beat Foster and Kruse (s) 29-14. Beaven and Underhill (s) beat Boyne and Simmonds (s) 23-21. Steven (sub.) and Sorenson (s) beat Boyne and Simmonds (s) 21-20. McPherson and J. G. Stevens (s) beat Boyne and Simmonds (s) 22-18. Boyne and Simmonds (s) beat Hawker and Whyte (s) 22-14. McPherson and J. G. Stevens (s) beat Harrington and Riggs (s) 19-11.
