Chief among the semi-precious gems to be found along Pacific Coast beaches are agate, moonstone, jasper, californite, magnetite, sagenite, water agate, petrified wood, bloodstone, and garnet. During the gold rush of 1849 and the years following, considerable quantities of gold were washed from the sands of California and Oregon beaches.
