WAIRARAPA PRIMARY SCHOOLS. ANNUAL REPORT. The following is the annual report for the 1937 season of the Wairarapa Primary Schools Rugby Union:— "The season just passed has been a difficult one but wc take pleasure in stating that it was also successful from a purely playing point of view. During the year we lost the services of Messrs J. S. Blackman from Lansdowne and A. Ivey from Greytown. We wish them every success in their new positions and take pleasure in welcoming Messrs H. Smith and J. L. Ewing. “The Senior Championship resulted in a win for Greytown (12-6) against a strong defending team from Central and our congratulations are extended to Greytown on their win. The removal of championship points has not in any way lessened the interest in the Junior competition which still produces good games. This year a combined team from the Masterton schools engaged in a competition with teams from the High and Technical Schools and although they did not win many games the competition was very closely contested and interesting. “At the Annual Quadrangular Tournament our representative team did not win a game but were not disgraced in any of the games although we had the lightest team. Wanganui won and this brings them level again with Wairarapa in the matter of Tournament wins. Our thanks are due to the Wanganui Schools’ Union (especially Messrs F. C. Jannings and W. P. Williams) for the lavish -hospitality showered on the team and the Managers, Messrs. L. D. Keedwell and J. A. Kennedy. The Fifth Annual Seven-a-side Tournament held at Masterton was very successful and we were lucky with the weather in having a very fine day. Greytown were too strong for any of the other teams in the Senior competition, beating Central in the final 15-0. Junior final: St. Patrick’s beat Solway 11-0, and in the Third Grade final Carterton A beat Carterton B 12-0. “Once again the finance is in a poor state as we have finished the season with a debit balance of £3/9/10. A special effort will be needed this year to put the finance on a sounder footing. .“Our thanks are due to the Wairarapa Union for assistance with our representative team to the annual tournament and for the chance- given to have a round table discussion on the future of Rugby in the schools as this should help to improve the game in general; to the press for never failing courtesy in giving their support; to the Wairarapa High School for making games possible for some of our boys, supplying grounds and making senior boys available for refereeing; to those who so-ably assisted with donations and help in many ways (Messrs. N. G. Rayner, G. Cornick, Masterton and Red Star football clubs) and to all others who helped to make our work with the boys so much easier and more enjoyable. “In conclusion may we trust that all our supporters will stand by our efforts to keep the old game going in our schools throughout the coming season. For the Schools’ Union: E. G. Coddington, president; J. A. Kennedy, hon. secretary.” .
