The fruit grading and inspection regulations issued last week apply specifically to forty-seven varieties, including Edward Lippiatt, Frimley Beauty, Glengyle Red, McLiver’s Winesap, Mr. Gladstone, Salome, Shoreland Queen, Stansill, Wolsey Stark, Stayman Winesap and Willie Sharp, and also cover “other dessert varieties” which are not enumerated. Seventeen cooking varieties are also specified. -7r—“ Following a succession of northerly, winds lately, many large varieties of jellyfish which really belong to deep water have been brought close in to the shore. Just after Christmas there was a prevalence of jellyfish in the harbour due to the northerlies. Mr A. W. B. Powell, of the Auckland War Memorial Museum, stated that during the past few days he had received many inquiries about large varieties of jellyfish found in the harbour. A strange variety was washed up at Ostend recently. It measured 2ft. across and was 4in thick. It was white spotted, possessed large flaps, and was distinguished by light coloured feelers.
