CARTERTON

(“Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of the Wairarapa Rugby Union will be held at Carterton to-night. A Church of England service will be held at Ponatahi tomorrow afternoon. A fortnightly Presbyterian Church service will be held at Gladstone tomorrow. ♦ QUEEN CARNIVAL. The Catholic Queen Carnival is now in full swing and is proving very popular with all Wairarapa people. A dance will be held at the State ballroom on Monday evening, when an enjoyable evening is promised to patrons. The dance orchestra engaged for the occasion can be relied on to give dancers every satisfaction. THE FOOTBALL SEASON. With the approach of Easter, football enthusiasts are busy preparing for the opening of the season. There is a general feeling in the South Wairarapa that this winter will be a very successful one, as club competitions will not be interrupted as was the case last year, when the Springboks were touring the Dominion. Players will also be doing their best to qualify for nomination for consideration by the selectors, who will be choosing a New Zealand team to visit Australia. WAIRARAPA SEAT. The selection of Mr J. F. Thompson to stand for election to Parliament in the National Party interests is noteworthy, as this will be the first occasion that a candidate resident at Greytown has stood for parliamentary honours, and it of course follows that no citizens of that old-established town has been a member of Parliament. Carterton has claimed the member for the longest period, as the late Sir Walter Buchanan, Gladstone, made Carterton his headquarters, and other members have included the late Mr J. T. M. Hornsby, and Colonel McDonald, besides Mr B. Roberts, the present member. Martinborough, through the Hon. A. D. McLeod, had the member for 12 years, while in the very early days the late Mr Henry Bunny was a Featherston citizen.
