CUSHION COVERS

A PRACTICAL SUGGESTION. You can make most attractive cushion covers from various kinds of handkerchiefs. A particularly good idea is to use a big spotted cotton handkerchief and combine it with a little simple embroidery, to make a cover like the one shown at the top of the group sketched. Some of the spots have been encircled with daisy-stitch petals. in contrasting embroidery cotton, to turn them into flowers, with tiny curved stem-stitch stalks and daisystitch leaves on either side to complete them. If the spots are fairly parse, you can turn every one into a flower; otherwise better results will

be obtained by embroidering alternate ones. A large Paisley printed handkerchief can be turned into an unusual cover for a small cushion, like the second example sketched. The cushion pad is laid in the middle of the square and the corners are folded over, envelope-fashion, to meet in the centre. The sides are joined with oversewing stitches in contrasting silk, and the plain borders of the handkerchief make an effective cross in the middle of the cushion.
