Mr. Jones doubted the courage of his friend’s dog, and declared he would ever face anything-. “Go the other side of the hedge, Jem,” said the proprietor of the dog, “ and go down on your hands and knees and bellow like a bull, and we’ll see about it.” Mr. Jones obligingly complied, and Bill halloed “ the pup” on him in an instant. The sagacious animal immediately fastened on Mr. Jones’ “chops” and that gentleman then hollowed far more naturally than when endeavouring to counterfeit a member of the bovine race. “Take him away, Bill, for mercy’s sake!” roared he. “No, no,” said Bill, “Bear it a bit, it’ll be the making of ‘ the pup,” ’
