Napier Boiling down Estaulishment. The Napier steam Boiling down establishment is now nearly completed and will commence operations in about a fortnight. The “ Hawkes Bay Herald” states thatsevral lots of sheep are known to be ready for the 11 pot,” so that in a short time, tallow may be expected to be added to our local exports. Should the yield be small for the first lots operated upon, the extraordinary dry season will sufficiently account for the fact. The results will be anxiously looked for by sheep breeders generally. The shareholders, we understand, contemplate, as soon as possible, adding a meat preserving branch" to their works. These two outlets for the supfiuous stock of the district will, no doubt, work well together. We only hope the problem of how best to preserve meat for export will speedily be solved. Until, then, it would be hazardous to be<nn operations, but our go-ahead friends of Victoria will, we feel convinced, very soon settle the question. It will be a good thing for this district when the stock-owners can, by either process, turn their, surplus stock into money. May the time not be far distant. The second —or, rather, the original Boiling-down company—received their plant on Saturday by the Storm Bird, the same having been transhipped ex Omeo from Melbourne. It is from the Langlands foundry, and is said by those who have seen it to be a very good plant. The works of this company will be at the Meanee
Incendiarism and loss op Life in Nelson. A disastrous fire took place in Nelson on the night of the 7th by which a man of the name of Rankin lost his life. Prom the evidence given ott the inquest it appeared that deceased was in partnership with a man named John Basely Swale, in the grocery business, and that the latter had agreed to buy deceased out of the business, on the day previous to the fire. Swale, it appears, set fire to the house and had not even the humanity to call his unfortunate partner who was thus burnt to death. He has been committed for arson and wiful murder on tne coroners wareant. Some of the buildings near the residence of the prisoner and deceased were also burned and damage to the extent of £I,OOO was done.
