WAIHENGA RACES.
The weather on Thursday was all that could be desired for the Wailienga races and the attendance both of Natives and Europeans was numerous. These races excite considerable interest here and are always well patronised. The officers of the Course were Mr. A. McMasters, Judge; Messrs A Bunny, H Braithwaite, and Alex. Gillies, Stewards:—Mr- DMcMasters, Starter, Mr. Sealy; Clerk of the Scales and Mr. J, Ray Clerk of the Course. Thanks to the exertions of these gentlemen the races were admirably conducted and passed of with unqualified success. The first event of the day was. The Hurdle Race. Prize £lO. Tom Sayers The first heat was closely won by Camilla ridden by J. Greathead, with Grey Jimmy, ridden by D. McMasters, pressing in dose. The second heat was won by Grey Jimmy although Greathead’s mare led the greater part of the round. In the first heat the racing was as before between the two horses, but on coming to the last hurdle, the grey which had the lead tripped and threw his jockey so that he was unable to remount. The mare was close on his heels but being brought too sharp to the hurdle breasted it and sent her jockey flying through the air until he alighted on his face some yards off and remained insensible on the ground. As both Jockeys were thus “hors de combat” Grey Jimmy was mounted by Murphy aud brought in first, Viles who got on Camilla brought her in second. The Jockey of Grey Jimmy was not seriously hurt but Greathead was picked up insensible and remained so for twenty minutes. Dr. Smith attended him and we heard yesterday that he was rapidly recovering. Waiiiexga Stakes,
